I like spoilers.

I frequently get involved in television shows that are finished, or nearly there and get an idea of where relationships end up or at least where they currently lie when I begin watching a show so that I know whether or not it’s safe to get attached to certain characters.

I try, when possible, to retrieve set lists of upcoming concerts I will attend so I know if they’re going to play my favourite song, when we’re nearing the end of the show and whether or not they’re going to pop into the crowd for a tune or two.

Not knowing how things will turn out makes me uncomfortable, edgy.

So my restlessness with life, isn’t so much a desire for things to be over, or even a fear of what will come it’s the discomfort of not KNOWING. Not being able to see beyond the bend, not being able to plan for what’s ahead that makes me crazy. I need a sneak peek, A vague idea of what’s to come.

A life spoiler.

Where can I look? Who can I ask? Where’s the advance information on my life?

Anyone?

Maroon 5 - Payphone

I am certainly a music lover but I’ve never had a problem with pop music and IMHO this is pop music at it’s finest. Cute, catchy and has made me smile and sing along more times than I can count, which is great because since the day I heard it I cannot get it out of my head.

Josh Ritter - Kathleen

A friend recommended this song to me on a “mixed tape” (ok it was a cd) he made me and said he loved it because of the line “All the other girls here are stars, you are the northern lights”.

This week, with all the news of solar storms and the increased occurences of northern lights - this song would pop into my mind. As beautiful as a sky full of stars is on a clear night, those who have sen northern lights can attest to the fact that they are a spectacular sight that makes the stars seem shabby and insignificant.

Anyone who has has been smacked over the head with love so hard that everyone else in the room, pales in comparison and seems to disappear, can relate to this feeling.

Flight of the Conchords - Carol Brown

I love Flight of the Conchords; they’re hilariously musical.

And even though I’m thrilled that Bret McKenzie picked up an Oscar for the tune “Muppet or a Man” from the Muppets movie the first thing I thought was - that’s not even the best song he’s ever written?! (it’s not even my favourite song from the Muppets Movie - which is “Life’s A Happy Song”)

The tune “Carol Brown”, which is my favourite FOTC song was nominated for an Emmy a few years ago and didn’t win. It was a travesty. And IMHO better than the one that got Bret an Oscar for.

Watering Hole Possibilities: Remedy (Jasper)

So I’m in the market for a hangout, A place to sit for hours ordering hot beverages and reading, or writing, or chatting with friends, someplace with a bit of personality and preferably some delicious grub.

I have the privledge of living in downtown Edmonton where places like this easy to come by so I’m sampling out a few to take stock of what my choices are. My formal search for a favourite watering hole begins today.

REMEDY (Jasper Ave. location)

When the “Remedy - Opening Soon” signs went up on their Jasper Ave. location I was thrilled. My friends and I already frequented the other location and if I could find an excuse to be on that side of the bridge I would stop in and grab a wrap to go - but this location is steps from my apartment. That being said, it’s a bit of a trek on a snowy day like today - and finding parking near the area is nearly impossible, but as soon as the weather warms and I get my walking legs back it’s a hop, skip and jump away.

It’s certainly shinier than the original location that has a lived it “student apartment” look (which works well as it’s so near the University). But it seems to have brought all of the best parts of the original Remedy - the choice of cakes and pastries the stacks of different kinds of tea and the varieties of alcohol. The clientele seems fairly similar, and there are just as many people scribling in notebooks or clicking away at laptops or splayed out accross the comfy chairs with friends in a kind of a squatting nature that lets you know they’re probably not just there for a quick meal. It is significantly quieter there - though it might just have been because I was there on a Sunday afternoon - but that could also be condusive to focusing on whatever I happen to be doing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The food is of course still spectacular. I’ve had a couple of things there and they taste exactly like they do at the original location. My favourite is the Palak Chicken Wrap; spicy chicken with a spinach, goat cheese and chick peas wrapped in a pita and served with a sweet tangy sauce that I love, love, love. And of course I’ve never eaten anything at Remedy without a chai - it’s really what they do best. Oh and their red velvet cake is a-MAZ-ing.

It’s great but I think it lacks the coziness and “lived in” feel of the original location, it’s only been open a couple of weeks so I don’t think it’s found it’s groove yet on Japser Ave. And I feel like some of their staff are still being broken in - last week I had someone take my order who couldn’t say “masala” - seriously?! You work at Remedy…

So big points for food but needs a bit of breaking in. And in spite of the fact that their chai is great - I’m really a coffee girl at heart.

Let’s see how it stacks up against some of the other locations in the ‘hood.

A few years ago I went to see Elton John with my parents. We had decent seats, on the floor and my dad spent most of the show shoving his fingers in his ears and complaining about how loud it was.

A generally older crowd most of the folks were bobbing their heads, but few actually got up out of their chairs to dance around while he was playing. I generally like to dance and sing at shows (sometimes, even if I’m the only one in the crowd doing it) but sitting with my parents I just tapped my toe along to the tune.

When “Tiny Dancer” came on - my favourite Elton John song - I stood. No swaying or dancing, I just stood up so I could feel a little closer to the song, so I could absorb every note as I silently mouthed every word. And with a catch in my throat as the final bars played out I slipped back into my seat.

My father looked over at me with a puzzled expression.

“Why did you have to stand up?” He asked me.

It was at the moment I realized: he will never get it.
